So a while ago I made numbers and months in illustrator as part of my 20% project. I printed them so I could laminate then magnetize and put on my calendar at home. Well its very difficult to cut circles and I'm a tad OCD. So clearly I was not going to cut them using scissors. The smallest circle punch they sell in stores was 1" in diameter and my circles were 3/4". If they were any bigger they wouldn't fit right on my calendar. So then I bought this circle swivel cutter its smallest circle was too big. So I find a 3/4" punch on michael's website. However they don't sell it in stores and they do not have an online store. (Don't ask me the logic behind this- supposedly they are working on creating an online store). Staples also sells a 3/4" online but not in stores. Finally, I decided to buy one off of amazon and I was able to punch and laminate my circles! Well after laminating my numbers I started to punch them out again my punch jammed. I eventually used a 1/16" drill bit to squeeze it open. So short story long- here is my awesome calendar. Every bit of the months and numbers was created by me other than the font. Here it is! Please excuse that I put 31 days in April- Don't worry I know there are only 30

I have always worked with photoshop to edit worksheets and fliers, to make business cards and personalized labels. On my new computer I don't have photoshop outside of my 30 day trial which I already used. And if you have been following my blog you know that I am working with Illustrator now because its more fitting to what I want to create.
So I decided to make one of my fliers in Illustrator. I was so excited, when I pulled the image in to move around and change- all of the elements were separate. I didn't have to crop and pull images apart. I also learned a little bit more about isolating layers. In photoshop you have layers you can edit. This is true in illustrator as well, however you can also have one image on a layer that is composed of different elements. You can click on the individual elements and adjust them in an isolated layer. As I was working through this I saw a cloud shaped element but only half of it was showing. When I clicked on the element it showed a path of a whole cloud. I tried so many ways to get the whole cloud show up. Finally I realized it was invisible or not colored- it was hidden (embedded) within an object. I ended up not using it after all that work. But here is how my flier turned out. |
Heads up!I don't typically like blogging because I lack a coherent train of thought when writing, use too many commas and run on sentences (as well as parenthesis- note this "sentence" alone); which make me look and feel unprofessional, yet don't want to go back and change what I wrote because that would change the authenticity of it and usually I don't remember what my purpose for writing was in the first place. Plus despite my poor grammar prior to editing this is the way I really think- one crazy long twisted train of thought that in the end makes sense to me and often not to many other people. Additionally I don't like sharing my raw thought. Essentially I'm a perfectionist. I guess this class will improve upon that. Archives
