Despite all of this my boyfriend asked me to create a custom background for his computer. As you can see my skills are very minimal but I figured I would just play around. Here are the two basic images I did during a 30 minutes period. Green and yellow represent his undergrad!
Now that I am back to working a little with photoshop I use it as a modern form of doodling in a notebook. (However this is much more distracting than doodling in a notebook. Instead of keeping me focused I get sucked into whatever I am working on. So, I really should not use this during times when I need to pay attention). Despite all of this my boyfriend asked me to create a custom background for his computer. As you can see my skills are very minimal but I figured I would just play around. Here are the two basic images I did during a 30 minutes period. Green and yellow represent his undergrad! I did not originally know the dimensions of his screen so I just picked a somewhat close pixel size and went for it. (I knew it needed to be more of a rectangle than this but did not change the size.) Once I found out the screen size I took the image I already had and modified it. Simple and fun even reminds me of do the dew lol. But I hope and will activity try to make my skills stronger than this.

As I talked to my professor about my 20% project he suggested that adobe illustrator may be better for my 20% project based on the graphics I have posted.
However in my 20% quest I have also realized a more specific use for the skills I want to acquire. I want to be able to create my own graphics for lesson plans and classroom items. Originally I used photoshop to edit worksheets and other classroom assignment. For my 20% project I wanted to improve these skills to create cool abstract images. although this is fun and headed toward what I want, I need more of a purpose for these images. Luckily I am in a curriculum integration and design class. My teacher showed us one of her curriculums and it had such cute designs, however she explained that she paid for these. Why should I have pay someone to materialize my thoughts into graphics when I can figure out how to do it on my own. So I am slightly modifying my 20% project so that I can better utilize my developing skills. I do want to continue to learn how to make abstract graphic images as well but maybe not at this point in time. More information to follow! I forgot to post a photo or example of the skills that I am starting with. This is a flyer made the other day to give to the teachers at our school. Below you will find a slideshow of the different steps I took. I use this process to create worksheets for the classroom or to edit PDF documents that I want to make large changes to. I always forget how to get the type to fit in the shape of the object so I had to look that up. I found the information here.
I do wonder if there is a quicker, easier or more efficient way to complete this type of work on photoshop. Here is my second try at the same image. The giant curve in the center looks better however I like the shape of the outer swooshes better on my first try. They looked more natural. I like the first swoosh in here but thats about it. For my third try I will go for a combo of all three! I'm also not a fan of the darkness of the yellow. In the tutorial they are able to get it to be a bright yellow. By the way this took me a total of probably an hour (10-20 minutes here and there).
Here is the Storify version of my 20% project. I guess I just jumped right in and picked a tutorial that would be chosen once someone knows more of the aspects of photoshop than I do. However I don't think it went to badly. |
Heads up!I don't typically like blogging because I lack a coherent train of thought when writing, use too many commas and run on sentences (as well as parenthesis- note this "sentence" alone); which make me look and feel unprofessional, yet don't want to go back and change what I wrote because that would change the authenticity of it and usually I don't remember what my purpose for writing was in the first place. Plus despite my poor grammar prior to editing this is the way I really think- one crazy long twisted train of thought that in the end makes sense to me and often not to many other people. Additionally I don't like sharing my raw thought. Essentially I'm a perfectionist. I guess this class will improve upon that. Archives
