I don't want to record a video of myself then show it to my students. That would be awkward for me to be showing my students a video when I am right there and plenty capable of teaching it myself. Unless it was something like a video of me hiking and analyzing rocks as I hike. I could show students how to analyze rocks in a real world setting. That would be really cool but I do not have superior rock analyzing skills. So that idea is gone.
My friend Kathleen suggested I read a book and then have Spanish and English subtitles.I loved this idea because it could work in the real world. If I made a collection of videos of me reading stories, my students could then read these books to their family at home. If the students did not know a word or understand a concept they would have the translation. My students would be getting English practice at home and getting to spend more time with their family. Many times its difficult for parents talk about how frustrating it is to help children with homework when they don't know the language. This would be a small way to start to break down the language barriers. Children can keep their native languages while reinforcing English language learning.
The problem is, my spanish is not great. And although majority of my students' primary language, if not English, is Spanish, I'm always thinking about the children who's families don't speak Spanish or English. Where are their resources.
Maybe for my project I could find someone to help me translate books into multiple languages. Or I could find books being read online in a language other than English that is dominant at my school and read it in English too. I could put the videos side by side and have subtitles so the students could learn. On the English reading I would have the proper language's subtitles and on the other language reading I would have English subtitles.
I am actually getting excited about this and I think I can make it work!
